Why is the 1.30x Multiplier the Industry Benchmark?

When switching from a W2 employee to an independent Corp-to-Corp (C2C) or 1099 contractor, you take on expenses that your employer previously paid on your behalf. The 30% premium (1.30x) covers four primary cost buckets:

  • 1. Employer FICA Taxes (7.65%): On W2, your employer pays 6.2% Social Security and 1.45% Medicare. On C2C, your corporate entity must pay both halves of FICA (15.3% self-employment tax).
  • 2. Unpaid Holidays and PTO (6% to 8%): W2 employees typically get 10-15 paid days off plus 10 paid federal holidays. C2C contractors only bill when they work.
  • 3. Health & Medical Insurance (8% to 12%): Buying independent private health, dental, and vision insurance without employer subsidies.
  • 4. Corporate Maintenance & CPA Expenses (3% to 5%): Annual business filings, CPA tax preparation for Form 1120-S, errors & omissions (E&O) insurance, and business banking fees.
